Stony Plain Youth Network

Updated: 4 days ago

Did I Just Accidentally Help Start a Charity?

That’s the question I asked myself recently after an idea—sparked by a chance meeting—grew into something much bigger than I ever anticipated.

It all started when I met Val Hoglund, founder of Under the Mane, at a Greater Parkland County Chamber of Commerce Networking Event. Val, a retired EPS officer with a career spanning 33 years, spoke passionately about helping youth in Stony Plain who are stuck in an unfortunate gap: too old for kids’ activities, too young for adult programs. These youth often end up with little to do, increasing their risk of falling into unhealthy behaviors.

Val shared her vision of using her horse farm as a sanctuary where youth could step out of their circumstances, develop responsibility, and build self-awareness. With a deep commitment to restorative justice and youth mentorship, Val combines her expertise in equine therapy, community-building, and mentoring to create safe spaces where troubled youth can escape their circumstances, develop new skills, and foster hope for a brighter future. It was inspiring, and it struck a deep chord with me.

Growing up in an unhealthy environment myself, I knew the profound impact that just one positive opportunity could have on a young person. Listening to Val, I couldn’t help but think of my two daughters and how initiatives like hers could shape a brighter future for them and their peers. By the end of the event, I’d handed Val my business card and committed to finding a way to help.

What could I, an HR consultant, possibly bring to the table? Turns out, quite a bit.

How It Started

My idea was simple: leverage my business expertise to connect youth with volunteer opportunities in local Stony Plain businesses. These partnerships would give young people a chance to learn practical skills, explore career fields, and see what’s possible beyond their current circumstances.

Tasks like organizing inventory, sprucing up storefronts, or assisting customers might seem small, but to a young person, they represent responsibility, structure, and growth.

Meanwhile, Val brings a remarkable blend of qualities that make her a true force for change. Val brings her wealth of experience working with the public as an EPS officer. Val’s tenacious determination ensures that when she sets her mind to something, it gets done. Her boundless energy and infectious personality draw people in, making her a natural connector who bridges gaps and brings diverse groups together. Val’s ability to relate to individuals from all walks of life is matched only by her deep compassion. She sees the potential in every young person and inspires businesses to do the same, encouraging them to step up and make a difference. Her charisma and drive light up any room, energizing and motivating everyone she encounters.

It’s this extraordinary combination of empathy, energy, and a laser-sharp focus on making an impact that has turned a simple idea into a thriving initiative. Together, her efforts and our collaboration have evolved into the Stony Plain Youth Network (SPYN)—a community-focused movement empowering youth and strengthening local businesses. Stony Plain Youth Network joined Cohesive Communities, a charity that was founded over 8 years ago, to help raise funds for this amazing initiative.

Why SPYN Matters

SPYN isn’t just a program—it’s a lifeline. It’s about giving young people opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have, helping businesses make a tangible impact, and building a stronger community. Here’s what we do:

  • Pair Youth with Businesses: We connect youth with volunteer roles tailored to their interests, fostering confidence, skills, and relationships.

  • Encourage Solopreneurship: For youth not ready for traditional jobs, we provide tools and training for entrepreneurial ventures, like lawn care or car detailing.

  • Support Youth Activities: We help fund sports, recreation, and cultural programs, keeping youth engaged and healthy.

  • Offer Life Skills Training: Workshops in financial literacy, first aid, cooking, and more equip youth with essential tools for adulthood.

  • Bridge Gaps with Law Enforcement: Positive interactions between youth and law enforcement build trust and mutual respect, fostering stronger community ties.

How You Can Help

SPYN thrives on community support, and there are many ways you can get involved:

Your financial contributions provide resources for youth, from sports equipment to winter clothing and tools for entrepreneurial ventures. Donations over $20 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt through the Foundation for Cohesive Communities.

Building a Brighter Future

SPYN is about more than just keeping youth busy—it’s about giving them a sense of purpose, a chance to thrive, and a path toward a brighter future. It’s about creating a community where businesses, youth, and families grow stronger together.

This may have started with an idea and a conversation, but with your support, it can become a movement. Let’s make a difference together.
